The current owner of this flute purchased it during his retirement as flute professor at the University of Oregon. The entire ownership history isn’t exactly known, but this flute is in excellent condition and was recently serviced by Gary Lewis.

The Powell website lists the flute as silver and doesn’t mention the platinum headjoint with a gold embouchure. The headjoint, however, is original to the flute, as indicated in the Powell ledger (see the last photo below). The sound is what you might expect of a vintage Powell with a platinum head – dense, colorful, full-bodied, and energetic, similar to the tone qualities of Tom Nyfenger and Donald Peck, both of whom played with Powell platinum headjoints of the same era.
