This Flutemakers Guild head may be the finest traditional wood head for silver flute we
have ever seen. The embouchure is generous in size, yielding a remarkably full, robust sound without losing a bit of tone center. The cut is traditional without the stodgy,
resistant feel of many traditional wood heads, and the tone is beautifully balanced and
even across all registers. This head is so comfortable to play that you will forget it is
wood, yet the ringing cocuswood character sings through.
Flutemakers Guild was established in 1961 by several of the best remaining workers
from the Rudall Carte company. This head cannot be dated precisely but certainly
comes from the early days at Flutemakers Guild. Thinned wood construction was
reserved for the most expensive instruments at Rudall Carte. Nearly all Rudall heads
are lined but this Flutemakers Guild head takes the thinned wood concept a step further
with an unlined head. The work was so good that it has come to us with no cracks. The
silver ferrules have not been polished to leave the beautiful cocus wood undisturbed.
