Lignum Vitae is the one of the hardest, most dense woods known, with truly remarkable characteristics. High end flutes have been made of this material since the Baroque period and its naturally lubricating and heat resistant properties have put it to use as bearing material for critical maritime use, ranging from 18th century chronometers to the drive shafts of nuclear submarines.
This head is one of David Chu’s finest. He has made full use of this dense and highly vibrant material and its complex overtones. This is a head with a miriad of possibilities. Its power is immediately obvious but that is just the facade with layers of tonal color waiting exploration just below the surface. By using thinned wood construction the overall weight is kept surprisingly low for such dense wood. The tenon is approximately .015″ wall.
