David Chu is well known for his wooden headjoints, and we’ve featured his headjoints numerous times over the years. This is the first acrylic headjoint we’ve seen from him or any other flute maker. The tubing is transparent, and the lip plate is wood. The tenon is silver and is interchangeable with other sizes. However, the largest size fits 0.014″.
The sound exceeded our expectations. While it doesn’t quite sound like a metal headjoint, it has lots of brilliance and resonance. It has the type of projection appropriate for a large ensemble. If you were to hear this headjoint in a blind audition, you might guess that this was a well-constructed wooden flute. It’s very responsive and articulates cleanly, adding clarity to your musical phrasing.
