This flute is a late example of an instrument made specifically for the military. It has US stamped on the barrel, and the serial number is on the barrel and foot. The headjoint lacks a serial number, so it could be a replacement. However, the construction of the embouchure is consistent with flutes produced in this era.
Upon first playing this flute, you will discover it wants to sing. It produces a big sound immediately with little effort. You can also feel the flute vibrate under your fingers as you use more air. The low register is rich. The upper register has lots of body. Overall, this flute is highly responsive and resonant, which is characteristic of nearly all military flutes we’ve encountered. (Most military bands have only two or three flutes that have to compete against many brass instruments, so we imagine these flutes are used to playing loud.)
The flute was overhauled by Gary Lewis in 2018, but the flute has rarely been played since. The pads are still in great condition. The flute is in excellent shape and ready for service.
